Prayer

In April families stayed together and experienced prayer stations. Here is a review of the topics we explored. You are invited to choose a link to learn more about that prayer experience and then practice it.  Which one did you like? Why did you like it? Did you not like one as much?

Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is a slow, rhythmic reading of a scripture passage, listening for a word or phrase that touches your heart. With a second reading, reflect on what God is trying to say to you or asking of you. With a third reading of the scripture, respond to God, speak to God as you would a friend. You can use the handout below to learn about and practice with the scripture we used. If you would like to participate in a Lectio Divina reflection, choose one of those links.
Lectio Divina Handout
This is a wonderful article about teaching and using Lectio Divina with children and even very young children. Start with the Sunday readings. Use the church website or an app on your smart phone to get the Sunday readings each week.

Divine Mercy Chaplet
As a closing activity and prayer, we prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet together in the church. We invite you to pray this at home as well. You can choose from the resources below. It is a beautiful prayer whether you choose to sing it or pray it.

Getting Started in a Prayer Routine

Starting a prayer routine can be the hardest part. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
  1. Pick a time, maybe it is every morning, maybe it is Sunday after Mass. Whether it is once a week or once a day. Pick a time that works for your family. This time will change as your family changes. Before bed might work when they are little, but scheduling it after church when they are older might work better.
  2. Add it to a habit you already have. If you already eat supper together as a family every Sunday night add family prayer after. When starting a new routine, if you add it to an already established routine it is easier to keep.  During Lent my two younger boys and I listened to a saint story each night before bed. It was hard to forget it since I was tucking them in each night and saying bedtime prayers. Plus the youngest wouldn't let me forget. Children like routine and the like predictability. Once they get in the routine of something they are good at holding your accountable.
  3. Start small. Small prayer is still prayer. Bless the kids before you leave each morning, Try the 5 finger prayer before bed each night. Say a blessing before your meal. During the meal go around the table and everyone say one thing they are thankful for today.  After a few weeks, add a spontaneous prayer of thanksgiving for something that went well or ask for help with upcoming events.
  4. Give kids choices. Take the lead of kids. Let them choose the prayer for the night. You can get a prayer dice and roll the dice. If they are little they can draw a picture of their prayer. Remember singing is prayer. Turn on Christian music or check out the playlist below. Listening to a podcast. There are many choices to audio prayer you can listen to and enjoy, if you need help getting started.
